Coaching & Mentoring
Turn your expertise into ideas people want to read.
Whether you’re trying to break into architecture and design journalism, shape a thought leadership idea, strengthen a pitch, or communicate your work without sounding like marketing copy, I offer one-on-one coaching grounded in more than two decades of experience in architecture, journalism, and editorial strategy.
As both a licensed architect and an architecture and design writer and editor,
I understand how designers think about their work—and how to make those ideas meaningful to audiences beyond the project team.
My goal isn’t simply to rewrite your work for you. It’s to help you become a stronger, more confident communicator—someone who can recognize a story, understand what an audience needs, and express ideas clearly and persuasively.
One-on-One Coaching
Coaching sessions are tailored to what you’re working on and where you want to go. We can use our time to develop an idea from scratch, troubleshoot something that isn’t working, review a pitch or draft, or talk through a larger editorial or career strategy.
For architects and designers, coaching can include:
• Finding the larger story within a project
• Developing thought leadership and article ideas
• Translating architecture-speak into clear, engaging language
• Understanding how editors and audiences evaluate ideas
• Shaping ideas for audiences beyond the profession
• Strengthening your own writing and communication skills
For design writers, coaching can include:
• Identifying strong story ideas and angles
• Developing and refining pitches
• Understanding architecture and design publications
• Approaching editors and building editorial relationships
• Strengthening drafts and responding to edits
• Building a portfolio and navigating a freelance editorial career
Sessions are collaborative and practical. I’ll give you direct editorial feedback, explain why something is or isn’t working, and help you develop tools you can apply independently to future work.
Pitch & Draft Reviews
Sometimes you don’t need a full coaching session—you need an experienced editor to look at what you’ve already developed.
I offer focused reviews of pitches, article drafts, thought leadership pieces, and other editorial materials, with feedback on structure, clarity, positioning, audience, and editorial potential.
The emphasis is not simply on fixing the piece in front of us. I want you to understand the editorial thinking behind the changes so you can carry it into the next pitch, article, or idea.
Workshops & Group Sessions
I’m also available for workshops, presentations, and small-group sessions for architecture firms, professional organizations, schools, and other design-focused audiences.
Sessions can be tailored to the audience and might explore topics such as finding the story in a project, writing about architecture without sounding like marketing, communicating complex design ideas clearly, or understanding how architecture and design media work.
If you’re interested in developing a session for your organization, get in touch and we can talk about what would be most useful for your audience.
Work With Me
Coaching and mentoring can be scheduled as needed, whether you’re looking for feedback on a specific pitch or draft, working through a larger editorial challenge, or thinking more broadly about your development as a writer or communicator.
Tell me a little about what you’re working on and where you’d like help, and we can determine the format that makes the most sense.
